Why Choose Walking Tours

When you think of Italy, many people think of ticking off a list of ‘big ticket’ names such as Florence, Venice, and Rome. As incredible as these destinations may be, it's often difficult to experience the 'real' Italy when you're surrounded by crowds of tourists. That’s why for the past 17 years we at Italian Delights Tours have focused on offering tours that venture off the beaten track; beautiful places that you might never have discovered on your own, or amazing restaurants only known through word of mouth of local Italians.

More recently, we’ve slowed things down even further with our bespoke, food and wine-oriented walking tours. We're thrilled to offer these options, as they allow guests to truly appreciate the gorgeous landscapes on our tours by being fully immersed in them. There’s always something truly magical to discover - from the kestrels gliding overhead, to the tiny pink flowers on the Rock Soapwort growing wild in the fields.

Our walking tours are designed for enjoyment; they are not strenuous hikes and don’t require any special skill. On average, we walk about 13 kilometres a day, with a mix of hilly and flat terrain. We give ourselves time to stop for photos, talk about the flora, rest, and keep an eye out for the chance to spot some wildlife. Recently, we were lucky enough to surprise a pair of courting roe deer who were so absorbed in each other, they didn’t hear us until we were nearly upon them. It was a beautiful highlight of our day.

Our walks usually take us along quiet country lanes or bush tracks, giving us time to chat and get to know each other, or simply enjoy the peaceful countryside. If you feel like you have had enough walking for whatever reason, we have a van that can take you to our next stop - which is usually lunch! And speaking of lunch, what better way to build up an appetite for a long, leisurely Italian meal, than by walking for a few hours beforehand. We have been delighted to see our walking groups heartily enjoy their meals. These special lunches often consist of quite a few courses, so it is great to see guests eager for the next dish while enjoying a glass of wine or a refreshing soft drink.

Our intimate walking tours also allow time for unexpected encounters with locals. Because we offer genuine small group tours (with usually no more than 7 people per group), we often find ourselves welcomed into intimate, delightful moments. We’ve been invited into homes, welcomed into front yards to admire beautiful country views, and ushered into gardens to rest and share a chat. We've even explored medieval salami cellars!

We walk not only for the beauty offered on our walks, but for the gentle way that walking connects us with the surrounding natural landscapes. Time once spent in tour vans has largely been replaced by walking in the open fresh air. It’s the most eco-friendly way to explore Italy, allowing all of us to enjoy the journey while treading more lightly on the planet.
